Zombie Magazine’s First and Last Interview with Johnny Depp

From “21 Jump Street” to “Alice In Wonderland,” Johnny Depp has displayed talent and range very few actors possess. He recently sat down with Zombie Magazine to discuss his role as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll classic.
Zombie Magazine: What led you to believe I needed another version of “Alice In Wonderland?”
Johnny Depp: Well, I hope that you, and everyone else who decides to go see “Alice” will come away with…
ZM: Let me stop you, because I think you hit on something really important just now when you said “you,” meaning me. Elaborate on that, if you would.
JD: Um. Uhhh…
ZM: For instance, when I was in second grade, my music teacher called me “Matt” the entire year because she got my name wrong taking attendance the first day of school, and I never corrected her. I just thought, “Well, I guess I’m Matt in music class.” Talk about how you approached the Mad Hatter role with that story in mind.
JD: [JD pauses and stares at ZM] I approached it the way I have every other role I’ve played without ever hearing that story.
ZM: And what is that process?
JD: I try to incarnate what I read on the page, present something honest.
ZM: I got a 790 verbal on my SATs.
JD: [JD blinks, lights a cigarette from the pack he was carrying in his breast pocket, draws deeply, exhales, draws deeply again, exhales again] Yeah?
ZM: Fuckin’ a. Can I get one of those?
JD: [Draws deeply, exhales, reluctantly withdraws cigarette from pack and hands it, with matchbook, to ZM] Sure thing.
ZM: [Places cigarette behind ear and pockets matches] Thanks. Before I forget, I have to tell you how much I enjoyed blow.
JD: Thank you.
ZM: For what?
JD: Well, for complimenting the film I was in, I guess.
ZM: What film?
JD: “Blow.”
ZM: Never saw it. Since I stopped doing coke, I can’t stay awake in dark rooms.
JD: How long have you worked for ZM?
ZM: We’re not hiring right now, if that’s what you’re asking. If you have a resume, or a card or something*, I can pass it along, but no promises.
* — JD’s business card would have shamed a junior sales associate at the Des Moines, Iowa, Century 21 branch. However, JD later enrolled in ZMOCS** only to die in a tragic latrine-cleaning accident eight days into the 142-week program.
